For many years I used to attend jazz gigs. I would sit at the back where nobody could see me and lose myself in the sights and sounds. I still like to do this but these days I also bring a camera. This is what I did on a very hot and steamy night in Pontypridd at the Typsy Owl whilst listening to the amazing Ben Thomas on trumpet with the Julian Martin trio. I would like to share some of the photos that I took from that evening. This performance took place in July 2026.
In fact it was watching and listening to Ben play for the first time back in 2012 that inspired me to come out of the shadows and bring my creative impressions before a live audience. We have performed together many times over the years but I still appreciate the opportunity of sitting in the audience and visually capturing these special moments.
Ben introduced one of the tunes as being intentionally ‘scary, not sad’ - I like the idea of a concept that evokes potentially unexpected strong feelings amongst an audience and hopefully something that I will get to explore in some upcoming performances with Ben.
