LONDON JAZZ FESTIVAL WITH EYITEMI

Yesterday I (Lucy) found myself at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith watching Ben perform with singer/songwriter Eyitemi as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. I had not been to this particular jazz festival nor to this venue before or seen this band perform – so it was a night of new discoveries.

The band performed songs from Eyitemi’s latest album – Kaleidoscope - which was recorded at the famous Rockfield studios (in Wales). The album sounds great so I knew this would be a special evening. The whole band gave a moving performance, full of passion and emotion. This was quite a production with horn section, backing vocalists, a rapper and a contemporary dancer. I was inspired by the vibrant colour and movement of the night and swiftly got my camera out to capture some images (as you can see)!

Having recently lost my brother, I found Eyitemi's self-penned song ‘Lavi’ particularly poignant  (an uplifting celebration of a recently bereaved friend).  Her honesty brought a tear to my eye, but the hopefulness warmed my heart. Another favourite of mine was ‘Impossible, Possible’ - a thoughtful narrative of our many different (and very human) voices delicately told with spoken word and Ben’s diaphanous trumpet. The honesty of the lyrics, resonated deeply with the audience I think, who by the end of this sell out performance couldn’t help but move in a sway of emotion with the music. It was a wonderful night! I love experiencing new creative statements and this was definitely a night to remember - Eyitemi’s optimism is certainly infectious!
