COAST TO COAST WITH JIM & BEN

I (Lucy) have been fortunate enough to have attended (with Elly) 2 live performances by The Ben Thomas & Jim Barber Quartet. In photographic form I have documented their thoughtful rehearsals and have watched all of the hard work that goes into putting these things together - it's quite fascinating to watch the exchange of ideas between musicians and the creative sparks that inevitably fires up the band.

I also captured imagery at the 2 live performances. The first was in Fishguard as part of the Aberjazz Festival and the second was in Cardiff at the Flute & Tankard. Both gigs took place before full capacity audiences with some amazing energy in both rooms and 2 outstanding performances from the quartet.

Ben and Jim first performed together over 20 years. Jim's playing is full of energy and when he's in full flight it's quite something to behold and I find it hard to take my eyes off him. Ben & Jim were joined by some excellent musicians including Pasquale Votino on double bass, Paolo Adamo on drums (in Fishguard) and Iolo Whelan on drums (in Cardiff). Such a fantastic group of musicians to listen to, watch, photograph and hang out with!

For many years I have sat in the audience and sketched improvising musicians. I have always felt inspired to do so. This urge now encompasses photography too. I feel compelled to document the energy, passion and emotion of these special moments. Live jazz inspires me to create imagery that matches the vibrancy of the occasion. I'm grateful that Ben & Jim made these gigs happen and I hope that my photos go some way to reflect the special atmosphere that they created. CHECK OUT THE FULL SET OF IMAGES HERE
